The first thing that you should look for is either a track record of the business opportunity which you are considering, or a precise statement of any costs to you, what will be expected of you, and the potential earnings. Even after you receive this information, additional aspects of the home based business should be researched.

1. For what period of time has these business opportunities existed? Before you invest your time and money into a home based business, it is important that you research all business opportunities, and determine how long they have been around. If the business is introducing a new approach, and is therefore unproven, you have no idea whether or not the new approach will be successful. On the other hand, you could be right there for the start of something huge.

2. Are you able to contact the company other than sending an e-mail? Many so-called business are "fly by night", and are just out to make a quick buck, and come back disguised by a new website and domain name. If you are planning to pour your money into a business, make sure that you know exactly how to track them down if things take a turn for the worse.

3. Are there any other home based business entrepreneurs already involved in the business who you can talk to? A lot of business opportunities will try and convince you that they are legitimate with the use of testimonials. The problem is that there is no real way to authenticate a testimonial. Therefore, you should ask the business opportunity owner for the name and number of a person who you can contact. Be candid with them, and ask that they be candid with you as well.

4. How much is this going to cost you? The importance of points 1, 2, and 3 directly hinges on the answer to this question. The truth is that you can find a myriad of business opportunities which will cost you absolutely nothing to join. However, if you are compelled to for some reason pay money in exchange for the opportunity to make money, then do your homework. Although there are some legitimate home based businesses which do require an investment up front, there are more which do not.

Just make sure that you are aware of the aforementioned points before you invest your hard earned money into a home based business. As indicated above, there are several business opportunities which cost nothing yet allow you to earn a full-time income. Just keep in mind that the less money you invest in a home based business, not only the less risk you take, but also the more profitable you become.
